A Note about Witches
She reckons on doing away with one child a week.
reckon [ rek-uhn ] : to think or believe:

Then the witch stalks the wretched child like a hunter stalking a little bird in the forest.
wretched [ rech-id ] : very unfortunate in condition or circumstances

On the other hand, a ghoul is always a male. So indeed is a barghest.

barghest [ bahr-gest ] : a monstrous dog with huge claws and teeth
반면 악마는 항상 남성이고, 귀신 또한 그렇다.
Perhaps she is smiling at the absurdity of such a suggestion. Don't let that put you off.
put someone off : If someone or something puts you off, they take your attention from what you are trying to do and make it more difficult for you to do it.
아마도 그녀는 이런 제안이 어이없다고 미소를 짓고 있을 것이다. 그것에 넘어가면 안된다.
My Grandmother
our car skidded off the road and went tumbling down into a rocky ravine.
ravine [ ruh-veen ] : a deep, narrow gorge with steep sides.

How to Recognize a Witch
‘The cleaner you happen to be, the more smelly you are to a witch.’
happen to be : by chance, by coincidence.
happen to 부정사 : 대체로 '우연히 ~하다(이다)의 의미
'너가 깨끗할수록 마녀는 너의 체취를 더 잘 맡는다.'
An absolutely clean child gives off the most ghastly stench to a witch,’ my grandmother said.
stench [stentʃ] : an offensive smell or odor; stink.

on no account : If something must on no account/not on any account be done, it must not be done at any time or for any reason

Frizzled Like a Fritter
It was so crumpled and wizened, so shrunken and shrivelled,
