Mr Willy Wonka, the confectionery genius whom nobody has seen for the last tenyears, sent out the following notice today

The town in which Augustus Gloop lived, the newspaper said, had gone wild with excitement over their hero.

gone wild : To become very excited or enthusiastic (about someone or something)

the whole world, seemed suddenly to be caught up in a mad chocolate-buying spree,

the mechanical arm shot out and made a grab for the gold filling in the back tooth of a duchess who was standing near by.

shoot out : To dart, extend, project, or thrust outward very quickly.
duchess [ duhch-is ] : a woman who has the same rank as a duke, or who is a duke's wife or widow.

I went out into the town and started buying up all the Wonka bars I could lay my hands on.

lay/get one's hands on : to find, get, or control (someone or something

keep your hair on : to calm down and not be angry or impatient.

stiletto [ sti-let-oh ] : a small dagger with a slender tapered blade.
One-two-three is a combination of three blows in succession.
Knuckle dusters is a slang term for brass knuckles

Grandpa Joe Takes a Gamble

‘It’s my secret hoard,’ he whispered.

The Family Begins to Starve

After the snow, there came a freezing gale that blew for days and days without stopping.

gale : a very strong wind.

The Miracle

Charlie went on wolfing the chocolate.

wolfing : to eat a large amount of food very quickly

In a few seconds, there was a crowd of about twenty people clustering around Charlie,
